I wrote ‘The Complainant’ in March 2008, after the GMC hearing had been going on for almost a year. Throughout this time and later Brian Deer denied that he had made the original complaint to the GMC, or that the complaint had grown directly from his 2004 Sunday Times article. In this essay I tried to trace Deer’s background and give some indication as to why he would have been involved in writing his article in The Sunday Times and then making the complaint. This essay elicited a furious response from Deer who publicly denounced me as a ‘Dribbling Idiot’, inside and out-side the GMC, while furiously denying that he was in any way associated with the pharmaceutical industry.
